Talk Like A Pirate Day Avast, Halloweenies! Today indeed be Talk Like A Pirate Day, where beauties and bilge rats alike put some extra swagger in their speech. Why? Tis’ all in good fun, maties!

If September 19th isn’t enough to whet your pirate whistle, pirates make an adventurously fun Halloween theme, too. Since the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie came out in 2003, pirate parties and pirate costumes have become a very familiar part of our culture. It might be the middle of February but you can probably find someone who’s having a pirate themed party. Could be your co-worker or 4 year old niece! The pirate mythology is so full of adventure, romance, mystery, and surprises that it appeals to most of us on some level. It’s not surprising that since 2003, pirates have ranked on Top Costume lists every single Halloween.

If you fancy yourself a swashbuckler this Halloween, check out these customer favorite pirate costumes for some inspiration…

Top Halloween Costumes 2008

It’s finally here: our list of the hottest costumes for this Halloween season! We’re always one of the last Halloween websites to publish our Top Costumes list because we factor in a few more details that take time. You’ve probably noticed on a lot of these lists that the choices can seem pretty random. I mean Bacon and Eggs as the “hottest couple costume”? Poodle Skirt Girl as the most popular women’s costume? What the heck?

It’s been our experience that many of these lists are full of the worst sellers from last year and retailers are hoping to get that old stock sold quickly by labeling it a “top costume”. Other lists go just for the obvious choices like characters from blockbuster movies. Neither are very helpful when you’re looking for a great costume idea or are just really curious about trend forecasting. We’ve spent the last couple months gathering info from actual top selling costume sales reports, online communities, all sorts of articles, and of course our extra special Halloweenie senses. It’s been a lot of work, but tons of fun! So we present to you our super awesome picks for the 2008 Top Halloween Costumes. We hope it gives you tons of great costume ideas. Enjoy!

BONUS: With less than 6 weeks until Halloween,
have you chosen your costume yet?

Drop a comment and let us know!

Yip Yip Costume Idea

Remember the Yip Yip Martians from Sesame Street? Yep yep? Unh huh unh huh? Instructables user sliny shares a pretty easy tutorial for making this costume idea. It’s almost no-sew except for the mouth area where a needle and thread can be used. k7lim also documented a version of the Yip Yip costume on Flickr which makes for a great photo reference.

Below are some more completed DIY Yip Yip costumes for inspiration. Like the first image shows, this makes an easy group costume idea since you just need to choose different color “fur” for everyone. When making several at one time should be easy to set up an assembly line style of production. Although the idea comes from a kid show, this is definitely an adult costume due to the visibility. The black mouth opening uses some semi-sheer material that allows the wearer to see without showing his face. Looks great, but could impair your vision a bit especially at night. The material and flowing shape also mean that it will make a great choice for those cold fall nights and as a Halloween costume idea for pregnant women. Yep yep!
